i have a slight question to the artistic admirers out there. i was discussing something of more than the normal importance the other day with my housemate phil - desktop backgrounds, and we came across an interesting observation that was true for the both of us.
now, as we both noticed quite quickly, his current background is a good drawing of a sniper, we both liked it instantly. the other noticeable thing is that it's a female. now not to sound discriminatory or sexist, but both of us like the fact that it's a female sniper. it's not just with this background - a lot of the time when i see a female drawing, its ten times better then a male drawing, so it begged the question of me -
are females just simply better to draw with ?the picture in question -

(if you can't be bothered reading all this there is a "tldr" ("too long-didn't read" version at the bottom)
now as most of you know, i mainly draw females, it's not because i think they look better (well previously, now i do), it's because i never really practised drawing male characters, i can never get the lines right. and as a weedy looking male specimen myself, i don't have many resources in the mirror
(not that i'm well equipped as a female either). i can admit it - i don't have a manly macho figure, therefore any males i draw that are based on myself, wouldn't look cool at all.
when i personally draw the female figure its heaps of fun. its hard but rewarding - to get curves right, shapes round and clothing can be really detailed - if you start doing hugely detailed clothing on a male it seems he should be dancing in the street singing YMCA (sometimes its what you want). women have MORE curves, MORE lines, MORE shape. it seems a simple equation to me.
more detail = better picturebut this is not always the case - i know. but again if you reduce a picture down to basics, females still have more detail then males. here are a couple of silhouettes i prepared earlier. (don't laugh - i didn't spend that long on them)

i found some comparisons for you to ponder over (and a little history).
original batman, first appearance may 1939, created by (bob kane) - detective comics. still an iconic figure. his costume evolved over the first 6 issues of his solo title, and later changed in 1964 after DC planned to kill him off, but the story line was overhauled, also a television series came out in 1966 which increased comic sales. batman is planning to make a comeback this year being written by judd winick, while "detective comics" will be returning to BATGIRL.
batgirl was created in 1961 also by kane and a second guy, sheldon moldoff, and made regular appearances in comics from 1966-88 when she was retired. she returned briefly between 1999 and 2006 and will make a comeback this august apparently.
here are a couple of pics (again, no credit is issued here)

both heroes have almost the same costume that's dark and sharp. same ready to use utility belt and the pointed ears. great design -
but which one looks cooler ? another one ? ok..
original superman - first appeared in june 1932 by jerry siegel (writer) and joe shuster (artist), and single handed crafted the super hero genre through radio, television, film, newspaper and even video game mediums. distinctive and iconic. unfortunately shusters eyesight began to deteriorate, and with increased popularity came an increased workload - this made shuster establish a studio in which he still insisted on drawing every superman face produced. the 1980's saw a simplification of the multiverse rewriting many back stories, removing established conventions and characters from continuity including...
supergirl.
created by otto binder and al plastino in 1959, she appeared in comic books, animations, film and television. in 1969 supergirl was the lead feature for "adventure comics" and started a series from 1972-74 and a second one from 1982-84. she was killed off in the by DC in the reestablishment series "crisis on infinite earths"
here are the pics.

both heroes again, have the same iconic outfit (slight gender oriented changes), the difference - one is female and one is male. but then,
which one is more full of awesomeness ?if you're interested -
more info on batmanmore info on batgirlmore info on supermanmore info on supergirltldr versionnoticing my friends desktop we struck up a conversation about females in pictures and males in pictures, and decided that females always look better in images. but why ?
looking at batman and batgirl above, and superman vs supergirl... which versions more awesome, the male or female ? now check out my madz photoshop skillz yo !
same sniper image - modified a little to look like a man...

i know it's not the best job. in fact, if anything, it solidifies my talent at drawing males.
reasons and conclusionsdrawing femalesability to have more detail in clothing / accessories
can wear any type of clothing (or nothing)
naked females are cleaner, smoother and less hairy
extra curves and lines (traditional hourglass figure)
lines in clothing can accentuate curves in body
eyes / eyelashes / lips more prominent and exciting
hair more wild and free, long or short
drawing malesless accessories / detail in clothing
less lines and curves (traditional square figure)
clothing restricted
eyes and lips boring (or it looks like female eyes / lips)
hair usually cropped short, can't do much with it
(are males just an accessory to female drawings ?)
more comments will probably be added up here as they come in.
